a) someplace local to buy a good sharpening stone for my knives - I'm talking the kind you put on a counter and sharpen against as opposed to a small stone that you work over the blade.

b) someplace local I could take my knives to be sharpened

Looking for brick&mortar tho - don't want to jack with online/mail for this sort of thing.

You aren't really sharpening your knives, you are simply returning them to "true".

You can't sharpen knives at home without buying some expensive equipment. A grinder to remove metal from the knife, a shaper to reshape the blade, sharpening agent to actually sharpen it, and a buffer to buff the blade once it's sharpened. Probably best to actually take it somewhere and pay them to do it if you have really nice cutlery. If you don't give a crap about the quality of your knives, by all means buy an on-the-counter electric sharpening stone. Easiest way to turn a $100 knife into a $20 knife :)
