Wait, it's suspicious if a corporation turns a profit?

Politicians: haha, you bastards, we're gonna threaten you with all kinds of hell unless you lower your prices, what to you think of that!

Oil Companies: well, we're going to have to hire more attorneys to manage all of your efforts, with retainers and monthly expenses, so I guess we'll just raise the prices a bit more to cover those additional costs. By the way, let us know how much the 'windfall profit' tax is gonna be, so we can add that into the price as well. Any other bright ideas, nimrods?

it's within their rights.

hell, they audit individuals for less suspicious stuff. why should the big companies get a pass if they fall under suspicion?

purely personal and political.

if there was some evidence or reason to think they were up to shenanigans with their taxes, that's fine... but this is specifically indicated as singling out the 15 biggest oil companies and reviewing their taxes.

political.

Nevermind the millions of people losing their jobs and income if ideal is successful...

if it's a HUGE profit and it's so integral to the health of the economy as the gas industry is, then yeah, the gov't wouldnt be doing their job if they didn't at least take a look.

Plus, there have been instances in the not-so-distant past where energy companies HAVE been proven to engage in gouging/collusion. Of course, at the time there were naysayers who sided with the corporations, of course. (Just as there are now.)
