and yet there are low-level coastal areas that are not underwater or noticing this affect - why is that?

Melting icesheets in Greenland are a nothing but clever illusion whipped up by Communists and Al-Qaeda..

Whether or not human emissions of greenhouse gasses made enough of a difference (or whether or not there's anything we can do to stop the warming) is still questionable, but the fact that the Earth is warming up is indisputable.
Soth [Muninn and Myrddin]Apr 10, 2006 1:54:04 pm
kinda like lake effect but for the world.
GryxApr 10, 2006 1:59:00 pm
Volume-wise it's a drop in the bucket, and won't make squat of a difference as far as the ocean temperature is concerned.
What will be devastating (to us) is the rising sea level.

Greenland ice sheet (which is melting RAPIDLY) is enough to raise the ocean level by about 2.5 feet.
That's enough to flood many coastal areas such as Nawlins, Southern Florida, Venice, The Maldives, Bangladesh, etc. Permanetly flood them, that is.
Now, that is if Antarctica stays put and doesn't melt. If it contributes, then we can say goodbye to most ports in the world.
If Antarctica melts completely (which is of course highly unlikely) it will be the end of the world as we know it. 190 feet added to the sea level is a total catastrophy for the mankind. All of a sudden, Nepal will become a nice place to live in.

where are we seeing the resulting higher ocean levels?
GryxApr 10, 2006 2:18:13 pm
The Maldives are disappearing... Venice now needs a set of dams and dykes to prevent it from drowning (with Venice it's a double whammy since it combines the rising sea levels with the city sinking under its own weight). Coastal areas in southern Bangladesh are being claimed by the sea.

all over the world, wouldn't they?
wouldn't cozumel, the keys, parts of hawaii, etc, all be vanishing under rising waters?

The Norfolk fens have been slowly reclaimed by the sea.
GryxApr 10, 2006 2:29:24 pm
Sea levels cannot rise in just *one* part of the world and stay the same in the other. Sea level is the same, whether you're in Scotland or Australia, i.e. the impact will be global.
Btw, Britain is actually rather safe, as is Norway, for example.

The only country that doesn't give a rat's ass about rising sea levels is (ironically) Holland, but that's only because they've been constructing levees for centuries and have their entire coast sealed off.

Example: the Maldives are on average 3 feet above sea level.
Conclusion: The Maldive Republic is not going to last long.

sorry, a near 3 foot increase in sea level will be noticed *everywhere*, not just low-lying coastal areas.
every popular beach in the world would be gone by now if that were the case
