last time i paid like $40 and they put it on weird so now it points up at a 30 degree angle.

is this an easy enough thing for a noob to do himself? (go to one of those car supply places, buy a bulb, install it?) would i have to remove the lense or casing or anything, or is there usually a way to get in through the hood?

yeah you can usually get in thru the hood

if so, get the bulb from the parts store, open the hood and behind the headlight housing, you'll see the wiring. it unlocks by twisting it like unscrewing a bolt (lefty loosey, righty tighty). pul out the harnedd, remove old bulb, insert new bulb, replace harness. done.

make sure you dont touch the new bulb with your fingers

you might have the clips kind and one of the clips isnt secured and it makes the bubl all cockeyed in there. make sure both clips are secured if it has that kinds of seating.

if its secured properly then there should be set screws to turn to align your beams.

you're right. i just looked it up and found this...

Unlike most cars, these bulbs have some weird spring clip holding them in. When you combine this (which apparently requires a proprietary tool to replace the spring) with the absolute lack of space behind the bulb, you'll find this is a pain in the rear! Headlights are covered under warranty, though I'm unsure for how long. Check with your dealer.

Proprietary tool? wtf? god damn them. trying to make you go to the dealership. the thing is due for a tune-up, but i've been avoiding bringing it to the dealership because 1) the dealership maintenance dude lied to me last time i was there, and 2) they dont have weekend hours.

and god damn that service station for not playing straight about that and charging me full price after doing a hack-job at it.

there is a cap that screws off and then two spring clips that hold the bulb and its harnass in place (bad system if you ask me...hopefully they fixed this in the new saabs.) but I dont need a special tool. It just takes awhile to work at with a screw driver. And it is a pain in the ass. The fog lamps are even worse.

If it does truly need a special tool, you could call autozone (or advance auto parts...can remember which one) and see if they have the tool. They always advertise their 'borrow a tool' program. I dont know how much it costs, but if you are right there in the parking lot...maybe they'll let is slide.

otherwise, yeah you are probably going to be forced to the dealership or an indy.
